Drought tolerant maize hybrids have higher yields and lower water use under drought conditions at a regional scale

چکیده

Drought is an enduring abiotic constraint to stable and consistent maize productivity under climate change, especially for low rainfall regions with limited irrigation. One adaptation severe drought using drought-tolerant (DT) hybrids. Here, we characterize differences between conventional DT hybrids in terms of yield water-use efficiency conditions at a regional scale the Texas High Plains (THP). Using validated version APSIM-Maize, simulated yields across 11 water regimes 25 counties THP from 1984 2018. When irrigation amounts were constrained 90%, 80%, 70%, 60% 50% total used baseline scenario (BS; hybrid full irrigation), showed lower penalties stress relative This improved production by 19%, 24%, 26%, 21% each above levels. yield-target was set as BS, applied could be saved more than that hybrid, therefore reduced 17%, 16%, 15%, 15% BS irrigation, respectively. We had greater gain savings through deficit highlighting potential increasing adoption hybrid. Our quantitative evaluation advantage saving associated also highlighted benefits adaptive

Planting scenarios for maize cropping under drought conditions

ABSTRACT Water management is an essential concept for water intensive crop such as maize dealing with water shortage under drought conditions. Maize production is ranked after wheat and barely in Fars province, Iran. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the effects of planting methods by conventional and modified planters on maize growth and yield at different irrigation re...

Evaluation of selection indices for drought tolerance of corn (Zea mays L.) hybrids

Drought is one of the major problems affecting crops production, including corn, in many parts of Iran. In order to detect drought tolerant grain corn hybrids, an experiment with twenty corn hybrids was conducted during 2006 in Qom Province, Iran, using a complete randomized block design with four replications, under optimal moisture and drought stress condition. Results showed diversity among ...

High Antioxidant Activity Facilitates Maintenance of Cell Division in Leaves of Drought Tolerant Maize Hybrids

We studied the impact of drought on growth regulation in leaves of 13 maize varieties with different drought sensitivity and geographic origins (Western Europe, Egypt, South Africa) and the inbred line B73. Combining kinematic analysis of the maize leaf growth zone with biochemical measurements at a high spatial resolution allowed us to examine the correlation between the regulation of the cell...

Rice GROWTH UNDER DROUGHT KINASE is required for drought tolerance and grain yield under normal and drought stress conditions.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary food source for more than one-half of the world's population. Because rice cultivation is dependent on water availability, drought during flowering severely affects grain yield. Here, we show that the function of a drought-inducible receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase, named GROWTH UNDER DROUGHT KINASE (GUDK), is required for grain yield under drought and well-wa...

Measuring the impacts of adaptation strategies to drought stress: The case of drought tolerant maize varieties

This study measured the impacts of drought tolerant maize varieties (DTMVs) on productivity, welfare, and risk exposure using household and plot-level data from rural Nigeria. The study employed an endogenous switching regression approach to control for both observed and unobserved sources of heterogeneity between adopters and non-adopters. Our results showed that adoption of DTMVs increased ma...
